Mrs. Richter will replace Mrs. Ray as the kindergarten teacher in KB next year.  Mrs. Ray is moving on with her husband for his last year of seminary.  Mrs. Richter is the wife of our new high school principal.

Greetings,

My name is Kari Richter and I am excited to be the new kindergarten teacher.  I would like to share a little bit about my life journey.  I grew up in Lakewood, Colorado.  I have an older sister who has two daughters who are 14 and 16 year old.  My family still resides in Colorado.

I went to the Universityof Concordia, in Seward, NE where I got my BA in Elementary Education with a concentration in Early Childhood.  I got married right out of college to my husband Nathan.  Our first placement was in San Antonio, Texas.  In San Antonio I taught kindergarten for four years, and during our fifth year in San Antonio I was a stay at home mom and I ran an in-home child care.  Our next call was to Little Rock, Arkansaswhere I taught preschool, and helped develop the curriculum at the Early Childhood Development Center.  We have been living in Iowa the past four years where I have taught first grade, and preschool, and have recently been the director of a Learning Center, Preschool and School Age program.

I am a mother of two boys; Justin who is currently eight and Josiah who is four.  We love to explore new towns and try out new restaurants.  We love to be outside and go hiking, and camping.  The boys keep us busy with swimming, basketball, soccer and football.

LSA Welcomes New High School Principal

Welcome Mr. Nathan Richter who will be here this summer to take over as the new high school principal! Click to learn more about Mr. Richter.

Mr. Nathan Richter

I was born and raised in rural Iowa and benefitted from the upbringing my parents provided me in understanding the importance of hard work and having a solid faith.  My grandfather was a LCMS pastor his whole life and he persuaded me to go to Concordia University in Seward, NE and enter the mission field.  While at Concordia I majored in secondary education in biology, played football, and met my wife through cheerleading.  My first call was as a science teacher and coach at the Lutheran High School in San Antonio, Texas.  During my time there I received two Master’s degrees from Concordia in Austin: one in curriculum and instruction and the other in administration.  I then became principal at the Lutheran High School in Little Rock, Arkansas and learned a lot about administration very quickly and the number of hats that must be worn.  I was the principal and executive director for the Lutheran school in Cedar Falls, Iowa and am now excited to be part of the ministry here at LSA.  I have two sons: Justin (9) and Josiah (5) who will be attending LSA.   Some of my hobbies that I enjoy include: golfing, running, bow hunting, and reading.  I enjoy watching and playing every sport under the sun.

I believe that Lutheran education is about helping students grow both academically and spiritually.  It is through the relationships that we establish with our students and the opportunities that we make to share our faith with them that help them to realize their own potential and then work to meet it.  I am truly thankful that God has brought me here and wants to use me for His work.  I look forward to meeting and working with all the teachers, families, and supporters of LSA.

New Head Baseball Coach Announced

Welcome to Erik Johansen!
Click to learn more about Coach Johansen.

LSA is pleased to announce Erik Johansen as the new Head Baseball Coach effective with the 2012 Spring season. Coach Johansen has coached at MacArthur High School at the JV and Varsity level since 2006. Erik pitched for Fremd High School in Palatine, IL where they won a regional championship in 2002 and finished in 4th in State in 2A in 2000. Erik played for Millikin University 2002-2005. We are very excited to have Coach Johansen at the LSA and look forward to him building this program. LSA started baseball in 2010 and will be competing in its 3rd season in the spring. Construction has begun to build new fields on the LSA campus and we expect them to be ready for play in the fall of 2012.

“I am very excited to start a new chapter as head baseball coach of the LSA Lions!  It’s an honor to be so highly thought of to be put in charge of an entire program.  I can’t wait to get started working with these young men and building a progam from the elementary school on through the junior high and high school.  Our goal will be to build young men of character, integrity, and hard working baseball players.  Since we are in the early years of the program it will be very exciting to be able to be a part of ushering in the first baseball field on campus and hopefully rise to prominence in not only Decatur, but in Central Illinois.”

S.A.D.D

Learn more about this positive program.

What does S.A.D.D mean you might ask? S.A.D.D stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions. What S.A.D.D is designed to do is get teens on the right path in life. This is done by establishing a local chapter, which takes representation of the school body. The original mission of S.A.D.D. was to get kids to say no to drinking and driving, but has now expanded to include drugs. Teens that do drugs will be following a path in life that can lead to missed opportunities and disadvantages compared to teens that do not make use of them. That is where S.A.D.D steps in. They will sit down with the teen making use if drugs, talk to them, and try to get them on the right path. S.A.D.D also correlates with M.A.D.D, Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Edited Stained Glass

In Memory of Miss Sablotny

Have you noticed the new stain glass window upon entering the High School entrance? Here’s your chance to read some information about it!

The Senior Class of 2011 left this stain glass window as their gift for the school in memory of their class sponsor, Miss Sablotny, the LSA art instructor who passed away last year. The class had come up with the idea for the project after seeing the 8th Grade auction item at the LSA Auction earlier this year.

The mural consists of numerous pieces that were all brought into consideration in the Senior Class’ meetings with the help of long-time LSA teacher Mrs. Bryant. The small square tiles were made by the students of the class, and all of these tiles were personalized by the students. Some of tiles are very creative; one tile looks like a sunset, while another looks like a McDonald’s Sweet Tea. The crown on the top of the mural was brought in by chance after the students had discovered a sketch Miss Sablotny had done, the crown, which was originally intended to be used for a mural in the elementary school. After discovering the sketch, the seniors believed it would make an excellent addition to the mural. The verse that rests under the crown, Revelation 2:10, reads “Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.”

Please stop by sometime and check out the mural. We promise it is worth the look!
