The Lutheran School Association currently serves students in grades K-12. Our mission, “Educating for Tomorrow and Eternity”, points out the emphasis given, first, to teaching children the story of God’s love in Jesus Christ, and second, to making sure our students develop a set of skills and habits that will enable them to be successful wherever God might lead them.
The Lutheran School Association
The cost of operating a mission the size of the Lutheran School Association is over $2.5 million per year. Tuition and operating assessments from the six association congregations do not meet the full financial needs of the LSA: Generous gifts from our many supporters provide an important portion of what it takes, financially, to minister to our students and their families . You may designate the area of ministry your gift supports. You may designate your gift within any one of the three major areas of the LSA’s cost of ministry: Operations, Capital Expenditures, and Scholarship. You may designate your gift specifically to either K-8 or High School operations. You may designate your gift to defray your own congregation’s financial commitment to the LSA, in either capital expenditure or operations; you only need to inform us of your wishes, along with your gift.
If you choose not to designate a specific area of ministry for your gift, the LSA will use your gift in the area currently needing the most support. Should you also have a matching opportunity, your match will be applied to the same area of ministry as your gift, unless you designate otherwise.
Operations:
Operating expense is the single largest ministry item in the LSA budget. It includes things like staff salaries and benefits, books and other educational materials, utilities and repairs, instructional equipment, and a great many other, smaller areas of expenditure. Gifts may be directed either toward the LSA specifically or toward the assessment obligation of your Association congregation.
Capital Expenditures:
Capital expenditures costs are those related to building facilities and major property maintenance and repairs. The LSA recently completed a Sports Complex at a cost of over 2.3 million dollars. The 6 Association Congregations have committed to $2 million of this ministry area, of which approximately $1 million remains outstanding. The LSA Foundation owns and maintains the building and property, and is responsible for the debt service on the property that is not covered by the congregational commitments, currently approximately $2.5 million. Gifts to the Capital Expenditures ministry area are administered by the LSA Foundation. Gifts may be directed either toward the LSA Foundation obligation or toward the commitment of your Association congregation.
Scholarship:
Not all families have the financial resources to provide a Christian education for their children. Because the Lutheran School Association’s mission is, first and foremost, to bring Jesus to people, we don’t want to deny people access to an LSA education based on their ability to pay the tuition and fees involved. For this reason, scholarship funds have become even more important. There is always a need for funds that can be immediately distributed to cover the educational costs of needy families. The LSA grants tuition reduction of tens of thousands of dollars every year in service to our primary mission; those reductions need to be covered by scholarship funds.
There is also a need to ensure the long-term capacity of the LSA to provide a Christian education to people regardless of their financial circumstances. There are currently four Endowment funds in existence: the Edward & Lois Horn Endowment (K-8), the Edsel Tiemann Memorial Endowment (K-8), the David L. Burdick Scholarship Fund (K-12), and the general LSA Scholarship Endowment Fund (K-12). Additional gifts can be made to any of these funds.
Matching Gift Opportunities:
Many organizations offer their employees and/or members matching gift opportunities.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has been a strong supporter of the LSA. In conjunction with its fraternal members, Thrivent (formerly Aid Association for Lutherans and Lutheran Brotherhood) has blessed the LSA with well over one hundred thousand dollars within the past five years in matching gifts alone. If you own a Thrivent product and are 16 years of age or older, you are eligible to donate up to $600 per person to the LSA and an additional $600 per person to LSA High School. Thrivent will match ½ of each gift up to an additional $300.
You may call the LSA office to get Thrivent matching forms; you may pick them up or we will be happy to mail them to you.
Many corporations also offer matching gift opportunities to their employees. Typically, the Human Resources Department of your employer will have the specific matching gift program information; some will match a gift to the LSA, some may match both the K-8 and the High School, and others may match both the LSA and the LSA Foundation.
We thank God for the support and prayers of the many Lutheran School Association supporters.
