Recently, you may have noticed that LSA has been hosting Jean Days every few weeks at the cost of a few dollars. Have you been wondering where that money has been going?

The money from the high school has been going toward funding the LSA Polar Plunge team, which will donate its funds to the Special Olympics of Illinois. Each team member must raise $75 dollars in order to take the plunge into LakeDecatur. It can be challenging for some students to raise this amount of money. Due to this fact, these Jean Day fundraisers are aiding the students in raising their individual funds. When all the funds are collected and added up, the money will be distributed equally to each member of the team. As of right now, the team has raised $330, which is hardly close to their overall goal of $3,750. There will be more Jean Days in order to obtain this goal.

Elementary students at LSA have been wearing jeans to raise money for Feed My Starving Children. What exactly is Feed My Starving Children? This is a non-profit Christian organization that is committed to feeding God’s children who are hungry in both body and spirit. The process is actually quite simple. Children and adults hand pack meals specifically made for malnourished children. These meals are then shipped to nearly 70 countries around the world. Just one meal only costs 24 cents to produce, and 93 percent of total donations go directly toward the food program.

With the money donated, LSA has already helped many children receive meals. We will continue to help many people throughout the world in need. Just look at what God can do through one school.

Please be generous in your donations so that LSA will be able to most effectively help these awesome causes!

Mrs. Richter will replace Mrs. Ray as the kindergarten teacher in KB next year. Mrs. Ray is moving on with her husband for his last year of seminary. Mrs. Richter is the wife of our new high school principal.

Greetings,

My name is Kari Richter and I am excited to be the new kindergarten teacher. I would like to share a little bit about my life journey. I grew up in Lakewood, Colorado. I have an older sister who has two daughters who are 14 and 16 year old. My family still resides in Colorado.

I went to the Universityof Concordia, in Seward, NE where I got my BA in Elementary Education with a concentration in Early Childhood. I got married right out of college to my husband Nathan. Our first placement was in San Antonio, Texas. In San Antonio I taught kindergarten for four years, and during our fifth year in San Antonio I was a stay at home mom and I ran an in-home child care. Our next call was to Little Rock, Arkansaswhere I taught preschool, and helped develop the curriculum at the Early Childhood Development Center. We have been living in Iowa the past four years where I have taught first grade, and preschool, and have recently been the director of a Learning Center, Preschool and School Age program.

I am a mother of two boys; Justin who is currently eight and Josiah who is four. We love to explore new towns and try out new restaurants. We love to be outside and go hiking, and camping. The boys keep us busy with swimming, basketball, soccer and football.

Welcome Mr. Nathan Richter who will be here this summer to take over as the new high school principal! Click to learn more about Mr. Richter.

Mr. Nathan Richter

I was born and raised in rural Iowa and benefitted from the upbringing my parents provided me in understanding the importance of hard work and having a solid faith. My grandfather was a LCMS pastor his whole life and he persuaded me to go to Concordia University in Seward, NE and enter the mission field. While at Concordia I majored in secondary education in biology, played football, and met my wife through cheerleading. My first call was as a science teacher and coach at the Lutheran High School in San Antonio, Texas. During my time there I received two Master’s degrees from Concordia in Austin: one in curriculum and instruction and the other in administration. I then became principal at the Lutheran High School in Little Rock, Arkansas and learned a lot about administration very quickly and the number of hats that must be worn. I was the principal and executive director for the Lutheran school in Cedar Falls, Iowa and am now excited to be part of the ministry here at LSA. I have two sons: Justin (9) and Josiah (5) who will be attending LSA. Some of my hobbies that I enjoy include: golfing, running, bow hunting, and reading. I enjoy watching and playing every sport under the sun.

I believe that Lutheran education is about helping students grow both academically and spiritually. It is through the relationships that we establish with our students and the opportunities that we make to share our faith with them that help them to realize their own potential and then work to meet it. I am truly thankful that God has brought me here and wants to use me for His work. I look forward to meeting and working with all the teachers, families, and supporters of LSA.

Welcome to Erik Johansen!
Click to learn more about Coach Johansen.

LSA is pleased to announce Erik Johansen as the new Head Baseball Coach effective with the 2012 Spring season. Coach Johansen has coached at MacArthur High School at the JV and Varsity level since 2006. Erik pitched for Fremd High School in Palatine, IL where they won a regional championship in 2002 and finished in 4th in State in 2A in 2000. Erik played for Millikin University 2002-2005. We are very excited to have Coach Johansen at the LSA and look forward to him building this program. LSA started baseball in 2010 and will be competing in its 3rd season in the spring. Construction has begun to build new fields on the LSA campus and we expect them to be ready for play in the fall of 2012.

“I am very excited to start a new chapter as head baseball coach of the LSA Lions! It’s an honor to be so highly thought of to be put in charge of an entire program. I can’t wait to get started working with these young men and building a progam from the elementary school on through the junior high and high school. Our goal will be to build young men of character, integrity, and hard working baseball players. Since we are in the early years of the program it will be very exciting to be able to be a part of ushering in the first baseball field on campus and hopefully rise to prominence in not only Decatur, but in Central Illinois.”
